After firing Austin Seibert, the Bengals’ only kicker, at the end of the preseason, McPherson was appointed the starting kicker for the regular season in 2021. McPherson was the first player from Fort Payne High School to appear in a regular-season NFL game. McPherson finished the season with a 28/33 field goal %, an 84.8 average percentage, and 9 out of 11 field goals inside the 50-yard line.

In a playoff game against the Las Vegas Raiders, he kicked four field goals, guiding his team to a 26-19 victory. The victory was called the first in the playoffs in 31 years.
